FAQs

From consultation to surgery, approximately how long does the process take?

There is actually no set, length of time prior to surgery and the time frame varies per individual. Your insurance criteria may require that you have several months of a physician supervised diet and exercise program. On your initial consult with us, we will explain what your insurance requires prior to surgery.  You will need a psychological evaluation, as well as any additional testing the doctor orders for you completed. You also will need to be practicing the healthy lifestyle changes. Once you have a surgery date, you will begin your liver shrinking diet, which is usually between 14-28 days.

Where is your office located?

Our main office is conveniently located in Downers Grove, IL, just off of Highway 355. We are on the corner of Finley and Brook. Our address is 2801 Finley Rd, Suite 220, Downers Grove, IL. Off street parking is located behind our building. Our hours are Monday thru Friday, 9:00 AM until 5:00 PM. We also have an office in Hazel Crest at the Advocate South Suburban Hospital, professional building.  This office has limited hours and staff, so only post- surgical patients can make appointments at this location. This address is 17800 Kedzie Ave, in Hazel Crest, IL.

Do you have a weight loss program that does not include surgery?

Our Medical Weight Management program is run by Karli Burridge, PA-C, MMS, FOMA. She specializes in obesity medicine and is comprehensively trained in medical obesity treatment. You can obtain more information about Karli and the program on our website.

What insurances do you accept?

We are in network with most major insurance companies, such as Blue Cross, Humana, Aetna, Cigna and United Healthcare.  Please call the member services number on the back of your insurance card to make sure that we are in network with them. If you have an HMO insurance, you will need a referral for each visit.

Are you accepting new patients who have already had a bariatric procedure?

Yes, we are. Although you are already a bariatric patient, you will have an initial consultation with our doctor, the exercise physiologist and the dietitian. Depending on your goals, you will follow up with us on a monthly basis.

Why do I need to see the dietitian and exercise physiologist at every visit?

We believe that our multi disciplinary  program is necessary for your continued success. Prior to surgery, diet & exercise will work with you to incorporate your new healthy lifestyle skills into your everyday life.  After surgery, we want to make sure that you are eating and exercising correctly and you continue to maintain stable vitamin levels. Diet and exercise are also instrumental in getting you “back on track” if needed.

Do I need monthly appointments with the provider?

Yes, you do, for a variety of reasons First, we want to make sure that you’re on track and you are practicing healthy lifestyle changes. Many questions can come up and we want you have all the answers you need. We want to make sure all testing is getting completed and that there are no additional tests that may be required.  Coming to see us promotes accountability, which is important for many patients. Also, some insurances require a certain number of consecutive months in a supervised weight loss program.

Do I have to lose a certain amount of weight prior to surgery?

We do not require you to lose weight prior to surgery. However, many of our patients do lose weight because of the lifestyle changes they are making.  Patients on the liver shrinking diet also can lose weight. Most insurances do not require the patient to lose weight. However, some insurance criteria stipulates the patient cannot gain any weight during their supervised weight loss program.

Can I bring another person with me to my scheduled appointment?

Most definitely! We encourage you to bring your support person with you. Your support person is here to encourage you and to ask questions that you might not think about. It’s also nice to have another set of eyes and ears at your appointment because you will be given a lot of educational material.

Can I participate in your Support Groups?

Our support groups are available for all of our patients. The support groups are listed on our website and are scheduled for the 1st Thursday of the month. We have a variety of speakers from psychologists, plastic surgeons and our own weight loss team members.
